Getting to know your Certified Club Manager
PAUL SMIT - GENERAL MANAGER OF THE POINT WATER SPORTS CLUBS
What inspired you to achieve your CCM Certification?
Coming from a totally non-hospitality background, the CCM Certification enabled me to acquire most of the skills required to manage a growing club that was placing more emphasis on Food and Beverage, aspects that were totally foreign to me.
How as the CCM Certification benefited you as an individual and as a leader in your Club?
It has entrenched me in my position within the club with the staff and members as a manager qualified to do what he does. Not a diver turned into manager because he happened to be in the right place at the right time and does not have the necessary all round hospitality skills to cope with the demands of the job.
What’s the best advice you can give to help plan a career rather than simply work to keep a job?
Continual education is key to a successful career. I have always seen myself as a career manger or administrator and have done so in a number of diverse fields. It is continually building on the basics of management and administration with education that allows you to change along with the changing work environment. Just ask a dental technologist!
Is there anything you wish to share (quote, motivational information) to inspire ‘future CCM’s’?
With the rapid advances in technology , traditional careers are disappearing and are being replaced by other new ones that no one even knew about a few years back. One career that is set to remain in the advancing technology environment is the hospitality and service industry. More and more people will be moving into these sectors and setting yourself apart from the other is the CCM qualification.
